| Almost two weeks have passed since Deke and I made the Dark Pact? Unbelievable. In that amount of time I have accomplished diddly-squat. That’s not entirely accurate: sixteen Chaos Marauders fiercely stand on the painting desk, complete with basing sand, waiting for a shot of primer. In actual modeling and painting terms, this work doesn’t amount to much, but it also doesn’t mean that progress hasn’t been made. For example, a lot of thought has gone into color scheme. In the last post for this series, I boldly asserted that metallics were THE PLAN, man, and one from which I would waver only to court peril. Well, peril’s my girl, then, because I’ve had some other ideas. Nothing’s final yet, so there’s nothing yet to report. Suffice it to say that metallics are still in the running, but they’ve got some serious competition. If anyone feels like sharing ideas for original color schemes, please let me know. |

| And then there’s the matter of composition. Fred has offered a lot of thoughtful input into what units would make up a killer Chaos army. There are plenty in the list to choose from, that’s certain. We talked about the virtues of an all warrior army, multiple cavalry units, chariots, so on and so on. After all this talk, though, I am doubly committed to including and expanding upon everything included in the Siege Attackers boxed set. If this seems a little rigid, it is, but to a purpose. See, impulse has always held sway when I’ve started armies in the past. When I wanted something, I’d buy it, and if changed directions, then the old stuff would get swept under the rug. Impulse has reared it’s leering puss in this whole process, too, but I’m committed to following through with the “existing stock” idea of army building. This is an ethos exemplified by the old folks in my life, who wasted little and saved a lot. If “existing stock” seems like an imperative that contradicts the potentially flagrant and excessive nature of Chaos, so be it. Chaos is big enough in scope and application to have a shred of space for some frugality. |

With “existing stock” my credo, then, I’m left to decide whether to assemble and paint everything in the boxed army before buying the rest of the troops needed. The advantage to buying troops as needed is the freedom to paint whole units at a time and finish them before moving on to the next one. On the other hand, sometimes it’s good to take a break from painting those big units of twenty-five or thirty models. On yet another hand (how’s that for Chaotic?), achieving a consistent appearance among troops in the same unit is one of those GW army painting aesthetics. For now, I’ll play it by ear. Finally, just today (October 20th), Deke recommended that taking Crom the Conqueror as a general might not be such a bad idear for an undivided army. I’ve always thought Crom was a much badder bad-ass than Arachaon anyway, and the model is friggin’ foxy. Taking this stone-cold, rock-hard mutha’ from the Northern Wastes also provides some great ideas for theme and composition. So I’ve decided to take Crom’ s merciless ass as the head of this army. And lest any of you sweat blood over the collusion of the ass/head mixed metaphor, rest assured that it’s an ambivalence that fits quite snugly with my own particular style of generalship. |
