Deke Week Two & Three |

| Blaargh, so it's taken me two weeks to write my Week Two update, oops. I figure since I'm already behind I'll merge Week Two and Three into one incredibly wonderful update.... Okay that's a lie, you guys only get incredibly wonderful updates every four weeks the others are progress blogs. Despite my lack of web-fu, I've been fairly busy on my army. I've now played two games with the army and finished assembling my warriors and beastmen. No painting though, poop. Lets launch right into the games, and their inevitable alterations to my list. My first game was against Larry and his crafty Dark Elves. For those of you not familiar with Larry's army it's about as hard hitting of a list as Dark Elves can make. Here's what I can remember: Dark Elf Highborn on Cold One 2 Cold One Chariots each carrying a Noble Level 1 Dispelling Sorceress 10 Cold One Knights 2 units of 5 Dark Riders 20 Corsairs 2 Repeater Bolt Throwers Hydra It's a nasty army if it gets the charge on you. With my army being effectively huge, especially for chaos he sought to minimize my frontage by placing his army all on one flank anchored by the board edge and a couple pieces of difficult terrain. It was a solid plan. In an attempt to counter the bottleneck that would ensue I loaded all my fast stuff on the wide flank and had them swing unopposed around the difficult terrain to threaten Larry's rear. This caused the desired effect of forcing him to fan out his troops so they were hit in the front rather than the side and back. Being Khorne, I relished a frontal engagement and my troops really proved why they are the preeminent close combat troops in Warhammer. I ended up with a solid win and an ever enjoyable play experience. I also learned quite a number of things. First, the army is boring. Don't get me wrong, I actually quite enjoyed my game and the army but you do nothing but move and fight. Movement proves to be a vital component. If I get out maneuvered I lose. Frenzy, keeps the phase interesting as I have to be constantly on my guard. Next, Demonic troops don't suck. On paper that instantly go poof rule looks atrocious, in practice it didn't bug me nearly as much as I thought it would. Last and most importantly, no matter how buff the Exalted Champion is he still cannot defeat a lord in combat. With only one character in my army I'm already beginning to realize I'll need something to neutralize hard characters. My second game would drive this realization home. My second game was against Fred. As we all know Fred is one of Da Mommas Boyz tougher opponents so right out of the gate I knew I was in for one hell of a battle. With his lizardman army Fred has veiled his tactical know how behind a Carnosaur and Stegadon. Here's the list: Old Blood on Carnosaur Scar Veteran with Jaguar Totem Level 1 Dispel Skink 20 Saurus 2 Skink mobs 3 Kroxigor 3 Terradons 5 Saurus Cold Ones 3 Salamanders Stegadon I knew Fred typically ran his Carnosaur and Stegadon up one flank. I deployed accordingly. Placing my fast stuff on the flanks to try to lead him around by the nose. Fred instead placed them in the middle. Smack dab across from my meaty center. Really, it all unravelled immediately from there. A poor deployment of my Exalted caused him to be immediately drawn out. He put up a valiant fight, and at on point I gambled a pretty huge series of troop movements on his survival. Sadly he came up short, and my center was blown wide open by the Carnosaur and Stegadon. From there it was just details. Fred gained himself a solid victory. This game emphasized that with only one hero I needed somebody who could decisively get the job done. Which means the inclusion of a Lord will be required. His points will be sorely missed. My army is running off a lot of cheap units right now that are going to have to be axed to get him in. Dammit. The other huge thing this game illustrated for me is, fast frenzied heroes belong near fast supporting troops. Having my Exalted get drawn out with nothing nearby to support him sucked. Lesson learned. Right now I'm crunching through a few lists. My basic premise remains the same. Every type of troop will be used. The common denominators will not. Since I have one unit of warriors modelled up badass style they will remain. At the moment I exceptionally bitter that I can't make a Shaggoth lead a Mortal army, but I'll struggle through. I also need to get a game in against a magic heavy army to see what my dispel dice are capable of. Until next week! Deke |
